datavism.org is the data-activism lab of the Data Underground — a non-profit digital art & education project, sister site of data-snack.com.

The short version

This site runs cookieless, privacy-first analytics — self-hosted Umami on our own EU servers (Frankfurt) — with no cookies, no cross-site tracking, and no personal profiles. It self-hosts its fonts (no third-party CDN call). The only directly personal data we ever process is the email you voluntarily give us for the launch waitlist, and only with double opt-in.

1. Controller

2. Server logs (essential)

When you load the site, our hosting provider automatically logs technical request data (truncated IP, timestamp, URL, status code, user agent, referrer domain). Purpose: operating and securing the site. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest). Retention: short-term (max. 14 days), then deleted.

3. Waitlist email (consent, double opt-in)

If you enter your email in the waitlist form, we send you one confirmation email. Only after you click the confirmation link is your address activated and stored — that is double opt-in. We then use it for exactly one purpose: a single email when the first line opens. No drip, no funnel, no profiling, no sale.

Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR (consent) and § 7(2) Nr. 3 UWG. You can withdraw at any time (link in every email, or write to ghost@datavism.org) with effect for the future.

The waitlist is operated on the shared mail backend of our sister site data-snack.com: your address is held in one global contact pool, tagged into the underground-waitlist segment. The double-opt-in record (status, timestamp) is stored as the system of record in Google Cloud Firestore (EU region); delivery runs through Resend.

5. Third-country transfers

Some providers above are US-incorporated. Transfers are safeguarded by EU Standard Contractual Clauses (SCC, 2021/914), the EU-US Data Privacy Framework where applicable, EU data storage, and data minimization. Residual risk under Schrems II / FISA 702 cannot be fully excluded; we mitigate it by collecting as little as possible (one email, with consent).

6. Your rights

You have the rights to access (Art. 15), rectification (16), erasure (17), restriction (18), portability (20), objection (21), and to withdraw consent (Art. 7(3)) at any time. Write to ghost@datavism.org. You may also lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority — for this operator: Der Landesbeauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

7. Analytics, cookies & storage

We measure aggregate usage with self-hosted Umami, running on our own EU infrastructure (Frankfurt). It is cookieless and stores nothing on your device; it builds no cross-site or cross-day profile (visitor counts use a daily-rotating, non-reversible hash of coarse request data) and no full IP address is retained. Nothing is sold or shared for advertising. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in understanding and improving the site). Because we set no cookies and read no information from your device, no consent banner is required.

Beyond analytics, this site sets no cookies and no tracking storage. The only browser storage is a local self-check / waitlist flag that stays on your device and is never sent. There is therefore nothing to consent to.

8. Minors

Intended for users aged 16+. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 16.

Als Diensteanbieter bin ich gemäß § 7 Abs. 1 DDG für eigene Inhalte verantwortlich, nach §§ 8–10 DDG aber nicht verpflichtet, fremde Informationen zu überwachen. Für externe Links haften deren Betreiber. Eigene Inhalte unterliegen dem deutschen Urheberrecht.

Verwendung für genau einen Zweck: eine Mail, wenn die erste Linie öffnet. Rechtsgrundlage: Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. a DSGVO, § 7 Abs. 2 Nr. 3 UWG. Widerruf jederzeit mit Wirkung für die Zukunft (Link in jeder Mail oder ghost@datavism.org). Betrieb über das geteilte Mail-Backend der Schwesterseite data-snack.com (geteilter Kontakt-Pool, Segment underground-waitlist; Double-Opt-in-Nachweis in Google Cloud Firestore, EU-Region; Versand über Resend).

Auftragsverarbeiter: Vercel Inc. (Hosting/Proxy, USA/EU, DPA·SCC·DPF), Neon (Analytics-Datenbank für selbst-gehostetes, cookieloses Umami, EU/Frankfurt), Google Cloud (Wartelisten-Datensatz, EU-Region, DPA), Resend, Inc.
